Mogwai are a Scottish post-rock band, formed in 1995, Glasgow. The band consists of Stuart Braithwaite (electric guitar, vocals), John Cummings (electric guitar, vocals), Barry Burns (electric guitar, piano, synthesiser, vocals), Dominic Aitchison (bass guitar), and Martin Bulloch (drum kit). The band typically composes complex, lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces that feature dynamic contrast, melodic bass guitar lines, and heavy use of distortion and effects. There is an artistic tranquility about their music that leaves you in reflection one minute, pondering your next move in life, before the walls are ripped apart around you, and your staring into nothingness. They’ve often been described as math rock or shoegaze due to the complexity and introversion of their music and they’ve sighted influences such as MC5, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Slint.
With the release of their debut Young Team in 1997, the band received critical acclaim and shot into the limelight, however the lack of vocals and introspection of the album meant that artistic recognition was not paralleled by sales. Their next couple of releases saw them gain momentum with 2001’s Rock Action reaching number 21 in the charts, however subsequent releases have not been so widely appreciated. In 2010 Mogwai announced the release of their 7th studio album titled Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will.
